The Unfortunate Fate of the RMS Rhone
#history #disaster
No matter how far technology advances, man is still at the whims of the sea. Even in an age of iron hulls and steam power, a single error can render a very capable ship into a wreck on the sea floor. The RMS Rhone, state of the art at the time learned this all too well. Learn her story.

Every thing that flexes has a poitn where it loses integrity. Flex a plastic or metal plate and it will began to crack and fall apart. Add temperature fluctuations to it and a ship will sink, if not put to drydock for repairs.

Could someone do me the kind service of technically explaining why destroyers with raised forecastles had fewer problems operating in the Atlantic and Polar Regions, whereas the larger, more heavily armed American Fletcher-class destroyers--which were seen as an innovative, design-and-power upgrade for the US destroyer fleet and was a massive success in the Pacific War against the Japanese, and, breaking with tradition, had a flush deck rather than a raised forecastle--never performed exceedingly well in the Atlantic and were limited eventually almost exclusively to actions in the Pacific theatre….? Is the answer as obvious as it seems: that the Fletcher flush deck, in the much more turbulent waters of the Atlantic simply let far too much seawater onto the deck and presented a sinking hazard?

The US Navy is a strange branch of service. It certainly has its glory, but it has plenty of absurd, completely avoidable, embarrassing mistakes like this. From running dozens of ships onto rocks, to blowing up their own ammunition ships multiple times, to crashing into cargo ships and bulk carriers in the modern day.

Was at a cabin that same date, just 20 odd miles northwest of Duluth enjoying a chilly November listening to the shortwave radio, heard the news on the missing ship, storm warnings and notifications that people should not be out and about. Terrible to hear the tragedy, that evening. Later as to the related searches afterwards. Went to the museum in Duluth, saw the exhibit there. Recalled seeing other ore boats on the lake years later, was able to tour one in the 1990s, docked permanently in Duluth, to educate people on these shipping behemoths. RIP to all crew who never made it that fateful night. It's fitting they ring the bells still in their memory. May they never be forgotten.

I heard a theory that the industrial alcohol was brought aboard in barrels that were not standard. I believe the person said that normally red oak was used for this but for some reason at least part of the alcohol was in white oak barrels which is much more porous. This person’s theory was that the crew could smell the alcohol and because they were concerned about combustion they opened the hatch to ventilate the hold and everyone got into the lifeboat as a safety precaution. He then said that somehow a line they would have left connected to the ship must have become unattached and because they had got off so quickly they had left the sails up so a bit of breeze catches the sails and goodbye ship. This explains the lack of evidence of violence and why the sextant was missing but not much else. They got off just in case of combustion and they expected to be in the lifeboat for only a short while, but somebody messed up a knot or two and they watched the ship leave them behind. This is certainly the most believable theory I have heard, especially since he did a demonstration where he dunked a piece of white oak in soapy water and then when he applied air into the cut edge it bubbled like mad. It looked like when a little kid uses a straw to blow bubbles in their milk.

Some of the ships mentioned as wrecked in the 1840s and later do not seem to appear on the RMSPC list nor in Lloyds. Some cases may be a result of mispronunciation. Lloyds List tends to be reliable as they would have been the insurers. Source footnotes would be helpful.

In 2004 I was surfing a particularly nasty reef break. I was inexperienced and cocky, so I took on waves I wasn't ready for. Long story short, the wave took me down, and slammed me on my back, breaking three vertebrae (T12 to L2). I couldn't feel my legs, and right there I thought I was paralyzed. As my thoughts drifted, I couldn't focus on the fact that I was going to drown. I heard a voice call my name. Nothing else, it just said "Eric". Clearly and calmly. As I was alone where I was, it really made an impact, and my brain started clearing, and my adrenaline kicked in. I pulled myself up on my board using the leash fastened to my right ankle, and took the current out, but to this day I couldn't understand what voice I heard. It's nice to know I'm not nuts, so thank you Dennis.

This has been mentioned in another video about the scuttling procedures, but the automatic detonation override did not work because Ripley did not do it correctly. Most people assume she wasn't quick enough, but on the emergency destruct system panel it clearly states: *"FAILSAFE SYSTEM WILL NOT ENGAGE IF SAFETY INTERLOCKS ARE DISENGAGED. REENGAGE SAFETY INTERLOCKS PRIOR TO ABORT CODE INPUT"* She failed to commit the abort procedure in the correct order.
